I have experienced this at a Special Needs school that I job shadowed at and this method worked perfect! There were many children that were not able to communicate with the teachers but with these Picture Schedules, they were effectively able to get their point across. This was AMAZING!

NPR recently reported a story about the retraction of a controversial paper published in the Lancet by Dr. Andrew Wakefield in 1998. It linked vaccines such as MMR to behavioral problems such as autism. Here is the link to the article:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2010/02/lancet_wakefield_autism_mmr_au.html

Are there any reliable longitudinal studies regarding the possible link between vaccines and autism? Is Wakefield's paper going to hurt the cause for further research or possibly encourage new, reliable research?

Is there equal concern about fish consumption in young children, specifically tuna and swordfish as both are extremely high in mercury? How do the levels of mercury in thiomersal compare to that of a few ounces of tuna that a child may consume somewhat regularly each week? If anyone is concerned with how much fish should be consumed based on the type of fish and your weight please visit http://www.takepart.com/gotmercury. It's an excellent site to gauge consumption so yourself and your children are not consuming too much fish per week.

I think it is great that autism is getting so much attention and so much awareness is being raised for such a great cause! The more we know and the more people bring awareness to the situation the closer a reason and cure will be made! Its just all around great and its really exciting!

I am with all the comments and are happy to know that there are laws in place to help those who are special ed. i feel though even though with these laws in place some improvement can still be made, because there is always room for improvement no matter what situation.

I am neither here nor there on the topic. I don't believe that anyone should be making assumptions or placing blame in either direction until there is enough science behind it. It's great to see that autism is being made more aware, but as far as a cause for it, I think there should be more research.

This video was so inspirational! I have a cousin with autism and even though I don't get to see him that often, every time I do he never ceases to amaze me. The last time I saw him I was able to take a picture with him and he was actually smiling! That picture makes my heart smile every time I see it!

The video gives good tips or symptoms that would help a teacher or caregiver in the classroom. It is always very important to observe the children and look for behaviors that may be related to some defficiency or disability. Those observations may be very helpfull to the person or persons conducting evaluations on a child with or without disabilities.

I believe visual aids and pictures is probably the best method to help with communication, not only for children with disabilities but for young children as well. Last school year I had an Autistic child in my class and we used lots of pictures to communicate with him, but it was interesting to see how the other children also used the system to communicate with the Autistic child and to follow directions and routines on their own.

It's very sad and upsetting to see how children with disabilities were abused and discriminated, it was horrible and I hope that people who was doing it was punished. I am glad that laws were created to protect the individuals with disabilities and although conditions are still not ideal, special ed has come a long way and hopefully will keep on improving.

It is really good to learn about new fundings for special education. The need is so great but existing funds don't seem to fit those needs. Special ed has always been put in the "back burner" and it has not been a priority for politicians and other people in charge of making these decisions. Hopefully this stimulus money will help the special ed needs awareness grow and more fundings will be allocated to meet the needs of children with disabilities.

I really believe that special ed teachers are in a class of their own. I have always thought that it takes a special person to be a special ed teacher or caregiver, and as I have more contacts with these types of educational programs, the more convinced I am that it is true. They really put out their best effort and their heart to help children with disabilities reach their full potentials. Hats off to special ed teachers!!!!

I think these are all great suggestions to work with children with memory difficulties. I work with young children and these strategies can definitely be adapted to their age and stage of development, especially the visual aids.

These are great strategies to help with memory problems. Every child is indeed different and until all techniques are tried only then will they be able or you as a teacher know which will work for them.
